DOJO KUN

Dojo kun (道場訓) = "training hall rules"

As a traditional karate dojo, we expect all students to follow our dojo’s rules and etiquette to ensure everyone will have a positive experience.

  1. We expect members to wear a clean and ironed do-gi (karate gi).

  2. Wearing jewellery, watches, shoes and socks or other accessories is not allowed during practice.

  3. We expect members to take care of their personal hygiene and trim finger- and toenails before practice.

  4. Please bow at the door when entering and leaving the dojo.

  5. Before and after practice, we do a ceremony where students line up based on current rank (and date of achieving the rank) facing the sensei, sit in seiza and bow three times at the following calls:

    1. Shomen ni rei – bow to the picture of Grand Master Otsuka.

    2. Sensei ni rei – bow to the sensei.

    3. Otokai ni rei – bow to everyone and say:

      1. Onegaishimasu before training.

      2. Domo arigato gozaimashita after training.

  6. If you are late for practice, enter quietly and sit in seiza, on your knees, in the back of the room and bow. Then wait until the sensei signals you can join the lesson.

  7. When the sensei is explaining something or you are resting, keep a respectful posture (seated on the knees in seiza or with the legs crossed).

  8. We expect members to treat others respectfully and do not tolerate any inappropriate behaviour towards others.

If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with the sensei or one of the board members.
